picture-1For the first time, I did layout for a children’s book yesterday. I’m not sure if I’m doing everything right, but I’m setting up styles in InDesign, figuring out my page spreads, placement of illustrations, etc. It’s good to get my head around where my illustrations will need to be placed – I made a crude stapeled-together mockup first, which really helped.

I also checked out a heap of kids books from the library, to see how the designers and illustrators handle special text, how copyright pages are laid out, dedications, about the author/illustrator sections, front and back covers, etc. It’s a fun project and a learning experience too!
