Looking back over the course of my career, there have been a lot of fun projects. Some clients know what they want and just want you to execute, some let you design their style and run with it, and others… well, they just resonate with more than just the creative part of your brain.
For me, that client had to be Bacon Salt. I mean, J&D Foods.
I first heard about them from a random post on Craigslist looking for a digital artist. I emailed but didn’t hear back right away. Then I decided to stalk them on Twitter. I mean that in a good way. I mean, any company that lists “love of cured pork products” as a job requirement has to have a sense of humor, right?
Turns out they liked my style and gave me a shot. I was to create a bacon character for their new Microwave popcorn. They liked it so much, they said “Hey Rob, why don’t you take a swing at our packaging too…” I was sold.
I’ve always been a fan of creative food packaging, from C-3POs cereal with the crazy masks on the back as a kid, to the awesome package design of DRY Soda Co’s bottles here in Seattle.
So i did the popcorn…
Then I did an envelope.
Then I did baby formula… (funny story there, the Huffington Post thought it was a real thing. #robsPhotoshopSkillsFTW
Then came Bacon Salt, Baconnaise, Bacon Gravy…
And Sriracha Candy Canes and Popcorn.
And Bacon-Scented Shaving Cream …
And the question pinnacle in my packaging design career…
Heck, Miley Cyrus even tweeted about this one!
So who has been your craziest, most amazing and fun client to work with? Give ’em a shout out here!
